This location is an ideal destination for nature seekers, the Caroni Swamp is an area of dense vegetation, many little canals, lakes, and a rich fauna. The Bird Santuary is also the home of Trinidad's national bird, the Scarlet Ibis. The swamp houses a wide variety of wildlife including 186 species of birds: osprey, herons, white flamingoes, ployers and egrets. This is a must for bird watchers.
The Sanctuary was established in 1965 to preserve the Scarlet Ibis, our national bird, that is just one of the 157 species of inhabitants. The Caroni Swamp includes fifteen thousand acres of marshland, tidal lagoons, and mangrove trees. Several thousand Scarlet Ibises nest and roost in the sanctuary and are often seen in large numbers during the last two hours of daylight.
