Description

Columbus bay lies on the south-west peninsular of Trinidad and can take approximately (3) three hours from the capital Port of Spain and (1 1/2) one hour and a half from San Fernando. This beach stretches over 4km in length with waves that come from the Gulf of Paria that are usually calm allowing for an enjoyable swim for everyone visiting. The wide expanse of sand at this beach makes it an ideal spot for picnics or games to take place.

For the adventurous, they can explore the various land formations and natural features of the bay. Columbus Bay is bordered by two points, Los Gallos Point and Corral Point and on a good day the Venezuelan Coast can be seen from Corral Point. There are 3 sandstone stacks which were created by sea erosion, also known as the 'three sisters'. The upper part of the beach is marked by the Constance Coconut Estate, which is the largest coconut estate in Trinidad. A wetland can also be seen in the central area of the shore on the bay.

Cedros Bay is another of the bay's that lie on the south-west peninsular in Trinidad and takes the same 3 hour drive from Port of Spain. The drive is well worth it. This bay however, is located to the tip of the peninsular and also goes by the name "Bonasse". It is referred to by that name "Bonasse" especially on maps and lies mere miles off the coast of Venezuela and is the most southern point in the Caribbean. This bay is also stated as the closest legal point of entry to Venezuelans wishing to enter Trinidad and Tobago.

At this bay, when the tide is low, you can see a large stretch of beach which is excellent for walking along the light beige sand. The shore on this bay also has lovely almond and coconut trees and is fitted with a board walk that stretches out into the sea. Most people that visit this bay, usually do so to bathe, buy fish (which is sold close to the beach), to hike or just to enjoy the scenery amongst other nature events.

This bay is situated in a very quiet remote area away from hotels and other attractions, but is not too far from Columbus Bay and the journey can be made via a short walk.

The clear blue-green water at this bay is relatively calm with weak currents, although when rain falls or it becomes very breezy with winds coming from the north, the water becomes choppy. When this happens, swimming is very dangerous so it is prohibited due to the strong currents that is present at that time.

This is one of the bays you can visit to get away from everyday life stresses or even vacation stresses like overly crowded restaurants and attractions. For persons visiting this bay and planning to spend the day, there is a snack-bar on site which would come in handy and on some days it is possible to order lunch from the mobile vendors who operate near the bay. Amenities however, like restrooms or showers are not available.
